The season opened October 8 against Atlanta, a loss in which Barnes scored 7 points with 2 rebounds and 2 assists in 16.5 minutes and finished plus-3. On October 10 against Phoenix, another loss, he had 6 points and no rebounds or assists in 16.9 minutes but was plus-2. His best night came October 12 against Utah: 19 points, 2 rebounds and an assist in 23.3 minutes, though the Spurs lost and he was minus-13. The October 14 rematch with Phoenix was a win, with Barnes at 7 points and plus-4 in 20.4 minutes. He then scored 3 points in 13.1 minutes in the October 16 win over Sacramento, and 3 points with no rebounds or assists in 9.3 minutes in the October 20 loss to Oklahoma City, finishing minus-7.

Last season, in 2025-26, Barnes was a fixture for the Spurs. He played 77 games and averaged 25.8 minutes, 9.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists, with 0.6 steals, 0.2 blocks and only 0.8 turnovers per game. The shooting was the selling point. Against New York, he logged 12.1 minutes on June 3 with 2 rebounds and an assist but no points, then 4.8 minutes on June 5, and did not play at all in the June 13 loss. All three New York games were losses. That postseason usage, followed by the shrinking minutes in the last two regular-season games this October, suggests the Spurs are leaning on him less in high-leverage spots than his 77-game regular season last year would imply.

That is the only reported item tied to him this season, and it is notes and context rather than a trade or contract story. Nothing in that report changes his status: he is on the roster, available, and in the rotation. For a 14-year veteran, the realistic read is that his minutes will move with matchups and with how the players ahead of him perform. The 19-point game against Utah shows the shot is still there when the opportunity comes.
