Boston opens the 2026-27 season in Detroit on NBC and Peacock with the starters rested, Devin Carter out until November 8 and the payroll sitting under the tax line. The matchup is Derrick White on Cade Cunningham, and the number of the day is the +17.9 lineup Boston can no longer put on the floor.

The host & The analyst0:04The host: Hoopsrumors ran the headline this morning, and it's the only report on the wire today: the 2026-27 season tips off tonight. That's not a scoop, that's a calendar. But here's what it changes for this team. The 4-0 preseason is gone. Boston is 0-0, in Detroit, two hours from now, on NBC and Peacock.
0:26The analyst: Confidence on that one is total. It's also the least informative certainty you'll get all year.
0:32The host: Let me tell you how we got here, because the preseason ended strange. Friday night in Philadelphia, Mazzulla sits the whole veteran group for rest. Conley, Tatum, White, Hauser, Robinson, Queta, George, Pritchard, Scheierman. And the kids win anyway, 125-120. Hugo González, 20 years old, drops 21. Ron Harper Jr. gets 16.
0:58The analyst: And the next morning they're all cleared. Tatum, George, White, Conley, Hauser, Queta, Pritchard, Robinson, off the list on the 17th. Except Scheierman, who never showed up in that clearing batch. Tonight's report settles it. He's not on it, so he's available.
1:15The host: So the story is 3 days of rest for the starters, going into a building where Detroit also had 3 days off. Nobody has a legs excuse tonight.
1:24The analyst: Which is why I'd stop treating the 4-0 like evidence. Those wins came against benches, and the one in Philly was won by a 20-year-old. It proves Hugo can play. It proves nothing about the first unit, because the first unit sat.
1:38The host: Here's what decides it, then. Cade Cunningham against Derrick White. White is 32, played 77 games last season, 16.5 points and 5.4 assists a night, and he's the guy who has to live on Cunningham for 34.1 minutes.
1:56The analyst: Cunningham last season: 23.9 points and 9.9 assists in 64 games. Detroit went 60-22. Their net rating was 8.4. Boston's was 8.3. We spent the whole summer talking about Philadelphia, and the better regular-season team in the East, by one tenth of a point, was Detroit.
2:15The host: One tenth. Then there's the Jalen Duren problem. 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in 70 games. Who takes him, Queta or Robinson?
2:27The analyst: Queta is the 25.3-minute guy, 76 games last season. Robinson is the 19.6-minute reliever, 8.8 rebounds in that time. Duren is the matchup the box score won't flatter. And Detroit played at a 99.9 pace last season against Boston's 95.6. They want it fast.
2:48The host: And Boston wants it slow. Who's out for them?
2:52The analyst: Taurean Prince, personal reasons. 26 games, 9.2 points last season, a bench wing. Cunningham, Duren, Duncan Robinson, John Collins, Ausar Thompson are all there. It changes nothing about how they beat you.
3:08The host: Our side, one name. Devin Carter, out, illness, estimated return November 8. And that one's got a story. Ten days ago we said Carter and Garza get another look with the ball against Philly's reserves. Since then he was converted to a two-way deal on the 17th, flagged ill, cleared, and then ruled out on the 18th.
3:28The analyst: So that storyline closes on two fronts. He's a two-way player, and he's not playing until November 8. Everybody else is available. Tatum, George, White, Pritchard, Queta, Hauser, Robinson, Scheierman, and Conley at 39.
3:42The host: Payroll while we're there. Four camp invitees waived on the 17th. McGlothan, Uzan, DeVries, Gray.
3:51The analyst: And the sheet reads $198.7M tonight. Ten days ago we read it at $203.9M. The tax line is $200.4M, so Boston opens the season under it. Don't overread that. A two-way deal and four waivers is how you get there, and Pritchard's extension from the 13th still has no reported terms.
4:13The host: Number of the day. Go.
4:15The analyst: Plus 17.9. The Brown, White, Queta, Pritchard, Hauser five. 35 games, 200 minutes last season, 122.6 offensive rating, 104.7 defensive rating. The best lineup Boston had. And it cannot play tonight, because Jaylen Brown is in Philadelphia.
4:34The host: We used that number before.
4:36The analyst: We did, as a strength. Tonight it's an absence. All three units on the sheet have Brown in them. The González version was plus 14.8 in 67 minutes, 13 games. 67 minutes proves nothing. It's a hint that Hugo doesn't break the defense, 96.7 defensive rating in that stretch, and a hint is all it is.
4:58The host: So the real number is the one we don't have. George at the wing next to Tatum, and no sample for it.
5:04The analyst: George played 37 games last season, 17.3 points at 39.2% from three. He is 36. Tatum played 16. The two biggest contracts on this roster, $58.5M and $54.1M, and you have 37 and 16 games of them. That's the thing the preseason couldn't answer, because they rested through it.
5:29The host: Tip is tonight in Detroit, NBC and Peacock. Then home Friday the 23rd, Knicks on Prime Video. This is the second straight road game counting Philly, 3 days of rest behind it and 3 more before New York.
5:43The analyst: Which makes tonight a clean read. No back-to-back, both teams rested. If the first unit can't hold Detroit under the 117.3 offensive rating they posted last season, it's not the legs.
5:55The host: So here's the question for everybody watching: who's guarding Cunningham in the last five minutes, White or Tatum? Tell us. Watch Duren's rebound count at the half, because that's where this one tilts. The whole night, from tip to final, is on the Celtics section of Hoops Nightly.
