What the Clippers Actually Bought When They Traded Kawhi Leonard

Brandon Ingram, plus Gradey Dick, plus years of draft control, for a star who still hasn't played a game.

By the Clippers Nightly Desk · Saturday, October 10

The Clippers sent Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto on September 14 under league penalty, taking back Brandon Ingram, the wing Gradey Dick, plus future draft compensation. Ingram, who averaged 21.5 points last season, has not played for his new team: a partially torn Achilles has him targeting a November 1 return, well after the October 21 opener.

Ingram's track record makes the swap defensible on talent alone.

Last season, in 77 games, Ingram scored 21.5 points a night with 5.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and a 38.2 percent clip from three. That production, at 29, slots above anything the Clippers had at forward beyond Hachimura's 11.5 points. Dick, 22, adds a cheap, long-term wing at a position the roster was thin at once Strus went down.

2

The draft cost is steep and largely one-directional.

The penalties stripped the Clippers of their 2029 and 2030 first-round picks outright, their swap rights in 2027, 2028 and 2030, and second-rounders already promised to Utah and San Antonio. A swap only pays off if the Clippers finish worse than their partner in those years; the forfeited picks pay off never. That spans four draft classes, 2027 through 2030, with little of the Clippers' own future left to control.

Ingram will not answer the question this season opens with.

The regular season begins October 21 against the Kings; Ingram's partially torn Achilles has him penciled in for a November 1 return, meaning the team's biggest offseason addition misses the first stretch entirely. Beal and Sanders both carry questionable tags into the preseason trip to Toronto, so the wing rotation leans on Hachimura and Dick before Ingram ever takes the floor.

4

The verdict waits on games, not math.

A trade weighed against four years of pick control cannot be scored before the player it was built around has suited up for the Clippers. Until Ingram plays and the swapped picks actually convert, the honest read is that the Clippers bought upside on credit, real on paper and unproven on the floor.

When will Brandon Ingram play for the Clippers?

He is targeting a return around November 1, after a partially torn Achilles kept him out past the October 21 opener against the Kings.

What draft picks did the Clippers give up in the Kawhi Leonard trade?

Beyond sending Leonard back to Toronto, the penalties cost the Clippers their 2029 and 2030 first-round picks outright, swap rights in 2027, 2028 and 2030, and second-rounders owed to Utah and San Antonio.
