Giannis Antetokounmpo enters his first full camp with Miami already the highest-usage option on the roster, and last season's numbers back that up. A left knee injury has him listed day-to-day, with an estimated return of October 1 — two weeks before the opener.

The Role

Antetokounmpo is the point of everything the Heat run. His 35.8 percent usage rate last season was easily the highest of anyone in this camp, and his $58.5 million salary for 2026-27 is the largest number on the payroll. Nobody else on this roster gets built around. That's the job.

In 36 games last season, Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 28.9 minutes. He shot 62.4 percent from the field but just 33.3 percent from three on 1.3 attempts a night, and his free-throw percentage sat at 65.0. Those are the numbers of a bulldozer, not a shooter, and Miami has to build around that truth instead of wishing it away.

The Efficiency

The advanced numbers hold up: a 119.4 offensive rating, a 65.8 percent true shooting mark and a 34.4 assist percentage all point to a player still operating at an MVP level. The 114.9 defensive rating and 3.2 turnovers a game are the counterweight. Efficiency on one end doesn't erase giveaways and slippage on the other.

Antetokounmpo is owed $58.5 million this season and holds a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28. That deal, more than any other, is why Miami sits at $208.3 million in payroll, above the luxury tax line. The Heat didn't back into this number — they committed to it.
