Giannis Inherits A Pattern Pat Riley Built

Shaq, LeBron and Butler all needed a proving stretch in Miami. Giannis starts his tonight in Toronto.

Every superstar pairing in Heat history needed time to find its footing, from Shaquille O'Neal's 2004 arrival to Jimmy Butler's 2019 trade. Giannis Antetokounmpo's version of that stretch begins tonight in Toronto, where Erik Spoelstra's preseason opener may not even include him on the floor.

Not By Accident

Pat Riley built this franchise by importing proven stars to play alongside an existing core: Shaquille O'Neal traded in to pair with Dwyane Wade in 2004, LeBron James and Chris Bosh signed to join Wade in 2010, Jimmy Butler acquired in 2019 to pair with a young Bam Adebayo. Each pairing reached the Finals within two seasons. Giannis Antetokounmpo's arrival alongside Adebayo and Andrew Wiggins is the newest version of that same bet.

Why Toronto Matters

Tonight's preseason game at the Raptors is the first time this group plays together outside of training camp. All U Can Heat has reported Giannis is unlikely to make his Heat debut in this game, which means Erik Spoelstra's first real look at the new pairing will have to wait past Toronto.

What Closed Before

The Butler-Adebayo core reached the Finals in 2020 and 2023 before Miami traded Butler in early 2025, closing that chapter the way the Big Three closed in 2014 and the Shaq-Wade pairing closed before it. Last season, before Giannis arrived, the Heat went 43-39, 13th in net rating. That gap is what tonight's roster is built to close.

The Price Tag

None of Riley's earlier bets carried this payroll. Miami's roster costs $210.5 million, clearing the $209.0 million first apron and the $200.4 million luxury tax line, with Giannis Antetokounmpo's $58.5 million and Bam Adebayo's $49.8 million the two largest numbers on the books. There is little room left to adjust if the pairing needs time to gel.

The Bottom Line

Riley's Heat have rebuilt around a new superstar three times before and reached the Finals each time within two years. Spoelstra now has a fourth shot, and Toronto is only the first page of it.

Will Giannis Antetokounmpo play in the Heat's preseason game against the Raptors?

It's unlikely. All U Can Heat has reported Giannis probably won't make his Heat debut in this game.

Has Miami built a roster around a new superstar before?

Yes, three times: Shaquille O'Neal in 2004, LeBron James and Chris Bosh in 2010, and Jimmy Butler in 2019, each pairing reaching the Finals within two seasons.
