Heat Open Preseason in Toronto With Six Raptors Out, Fontecchio Heating Up

The Heat open their preseason slate in Toronto missing Keshad Johnson and Dru Smith, while six Raptors sit out banged up. Marcus cools the hype on Simone Fontecchio's hot shooting as camp's late roster churn gets its first audition.

Transcript

The host & The analyst

0:04The host: Two hours from now the Heat tip off at Toronto, and here's what decides it — Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo against Jakob Poeltl inside. I want to see who wins the paint.

0:17The analyst: First see who's even playing it. Keshad Johnson's out with a hamstring, no return before October 26. Dru Smith's day-to-day on his calf, targeting October 16.

0:30The host: Myron Gardner got cleared today, though. That's a body back on that wing.

0:34The analyst: One body. Toronto's missing six — Jamison Battle, Kyle Anderson, Allen Graves, Nate Bittle, Alijah Martin, Chucky Hepburn. All day-to-day. Preseason injury reports always read like a MASH unit.

0:52The host: Forty-six and thirty-six for Toronto last season, plus 2.9 in net rating, playing at a pace of 99.2. That's a real team even missing six bodies tonight.

1:04The analyst: Kawhi Leonard still put up 27.9 points a night — in 65 games. With him it's never the number, it's whether he's out there for it.

1:15The host: Scottie Barnes played all 80 — 18.1 points, 7.5 boards, 5.9 assists. Immanuel Quickley ran it at 16.4 points and 5.9 assists behind him.

1:27The analyst: RJ Barrett averaged 19.3 in just 57 games, and Poeltl anchored it at 10.7 points and 7.0 boards. All of that's last season. None of it is tonight.

1:41The host: Still like our frontcourt in this one.

1:44The analyst: This is a one-game trip — fly in, play, fly out. We're back home in five days, Pelicans on the 8th.

1:52The host: Toronto's got a week before their next one. No rush on their side.

1:57The analyst: Here's the number of the day, and it's not about Toronto at all. Simone Fontecchio's true shooting is 70.8% over his last 10 games.

2:08The host: That's absurd efficiency for a guy who comes off the bench.

2:11The analyst: It's 10 games, mostly preseason minutes against backups. It doesn't prove Fontecchio's a 70% shooter now — it proves he's hot right now, and the sample's too small to hand him more rotation off it.

2:26The host: You don't shoot that well for ten games by accident.

2:29The analyst: You don't build a bench role on ten games before the record's even 0 and 0 either.

2:35The host: Speaking of the bench — Lester Quinones joined the 29th, Bez Mbeng's in off waivers, Ian Schieffelin signed an Exhibit 10. That's a lot of churn for a team sitting at $210.5 million, above the first apron.

2:51The analyst: None of that churn touches the real money. Giannis is $58.5 million, Bam's $49.8 million, Wiggins carries a $30.2 million player option, Jović's at $16.2 million. The movement's all at the bottom of the roster.

3:11The host: Which makes tonight the audition for those bottom names — Quinones, Mbeng, Schieffelin, Gardner.

3:17The analyst: Worth remembering why the roster's built this way. Charlotte owns a protected 2027 first and a conditional 2028 first off this franchise — two-way names like Quinones are how you build around that, not with more draft capital.

3:36The host: Makes every one of these moves at the bottom of the roster matter more than it looks.

3:41The analyst: And there's a report out today, from hoopsrumors, touching Jović, Thompson, Wiggins, Johnson and Giannis. No details yet — just the headline so far.

3:53The host: We'll see what's actually in it. Giannis and Bam were both cleared back on the 29th, so health up top isn't the issue — it's the depth underneath.

4:02The analyst: Spoelstra's been clearing guys off that injury report all week — Gardner today, Giannis and Bam on the 29th. Johnson and Smith are what's left on it.

4:14The host: Ball goes up at Toronto tonight, on NBA TV, two hours from now.

4:18The analyst: Preseason game. Treat whatever happens as information, not as truth.

4:25The host: Three more after tonight — Pelicans on the 8th, Timberwolves on the 10th, Nets on the 14th — before the opener on the 21st, against the Timberwolves, on ESPN.

4:37The analyst: That's the date that actually counts. Everything before it is just evaluation.

4:43The host: Watch Fontecchio's minutes tonight — see if Spoelstra trusts that shooting enough to stretch them.

4:49The analyst: And watch the Heat section on Hoops Nightly for whatever's actually inside that hoopsrumors piece.
