Knicks Clear the Noise, and Towns Is the Only Rumor Left

Ten reports on the docket, five already settled, and the one that matters still has no answer.

The October cuts have moved from report to fact, which leaves the Towns extension as the only live story in New York. The money says the Knicks are not going anywhere near a trade, so the question is simply when the talks restart.

$220.4M: payroll, above the first apron

Settled, not rumored

Half the docket is closed. Shams Charania reported on October 15 that Drew Eubanks tore a pectoral muscle and would be waived, and that is confirmed. The same day's report that Tony Bradley and Ochai Agbaji were out is confirmed. Bruce Brown went on waivers October 17, confidence 45, also confirmed, and ESPN reported that night the Knicks were keeping James Wiseman. Two loose ends stay open at confidence 42: the Jazz claiming Bradley and the Dink Pate sign-and-waive. Neither man is on the 17-man roster, so treat both as done in practice, not on paper.

Towns talks, still paused

Steve Popper reported on October 9 that the Knicks paused every extension negotiation, confidence 37. Josh Hart's reaction landed October 10 at confidence 34. Then James L. Edwards reported October 11 that Towns was 'very disappointed' by the pause, and that one carries confidence 48, the highest number on the list. Nothing has moved it in nine days. That silence is the story, and it is a credible one. A disappointed star on a $57.1M number is not noise.

The money says no

Anyone selling a Towns trade should read the sheet first. Payroll is $220.4M, above the first apron, against a luxury tax line of $200.4M. Towns is $57.1M, Anunoby $42.5M, Brunson $37.7M, Bridges $33.5M, Hart $20.9M. The 2027 and 2029 first-round picks belong to Brooklyn, 2028 is a swap. There is no pick ammunition and no salary room. The cuts were about getting under a line, not about reshaping anything.

Noise around the edges

Marc Stein's October 12 roundup, confidence 43, tags the Sixers and four other names and gives the Knicks nothing. Kurt Badenhausen's October 9 franchise valuation piece, confidence 37, is a business story, not a basketball one. Two beat items deserve a mention but not a promotion. The New York Post's Jared Schwartz reported October 18 that Miles McBride's agent left the door open for future talks, and Posting and Toasting reported October 19 that the Knicks were not shopping Tyler Kolek to make room for Bruce Brown. Both are reporting, not fact.

Bottom line

The roster is set and the rumor mill is dry, which is exactly how a champion should open a season. Philadelphia comes to the Garden tonight on NBC and Peacock with LeBron James, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey, and it beat the Knicks 120-97 in the October 5 preseason meeting. The only item worth watching is a Towns contract update, and nobody has reported one.

Are the Knicks trading Karl-Anthony Towns?

No report says so. The only live story is that extension talks are paused, and the cap sheet and traded picks leave the Knicks no realistic trade machinery.

Who is left at center after the cuts?

Towns, Andre Drummond and James Wiseman. Eubanks, Bradley and Agbaji are gone, and Bruce Brown was waived October 17.
