Magic's opening week: Hawks, Wolves, then the Knicks on the road

Three games in five days, with Penda out and Wagner's shoulder still being evaluated.

By the Magic Nightly Desk · Monday, October 19

Orlando plays three games this week, starting Wednesday at home against the Hawks, with a 0-0 record and a thinner rotation than it wanted. The Knicks game on Sunday is the first road test for a group still waiting on Franz Wagner, Jase Richardson and Anthony Black.

3: Games this week
1

The schedule is home, home, then a trip to New York.

Orlando opens Wednesday, October 21, against the Hawks, then hosts the Timberwolves on Friday, October 23. On Sunday, October 25, the Magic play at the Knicks. A game at the Raptors on October 28 follows. Two home games before any travel is a gentle start, and it gives a banged-up roster a chance to settle before the first trip.

2

Wagner's shoulder is the question that shapes the week.

Wagner is day-to-day with a right shoulder issue, and his estimated return is the October 21 opener. Coach Sean Sweeney said Sunday the team will keep evaluating him, and the Orlando Sentinel reported he did some light work in practice. Last season he played only 34 games and still averaged 20.6 points. Orlando's offense needs him on the floor, and a cautious approach in the first week would be understandable.

3

Penda's absence tests the depth behind the stars.

Noah Penda is out with a right hamstring injury, with an estimated return of November 18. The Sentinel reported it is a partial tear in a different part of the hamstring than his earlier strain. Izaiyah Nelson is out until about November 1. Richardson, Black and Jonathan Isaac are all day-to-day with the opener as their listed return date. If they are all back, the rotation holds. If not, Jamal Cain and Tristan da Silva carry more of the load.

4

The Knicks game is the one to circle.

Atlanta and Minnesota come to Orlando first, so the Knicks on the road is the clearest read on where this group stands. The Magic's preseason was strong, ending with a 136-115 win over the Heat in which Paolo Banchero scored 24 and Desmond Bane 23. Preseason scores prove little, but Banchero, Bane and Wagner together would give Orlando its best version against a tough opponent. Last season's 45-37 record is the bar to clear.

When do the Magic open the 2026-27 season?

Orlando opens Wednesday, October 21, at home against the Hawks. The Timberwolves visit two days later.

Will Franz Wagner play in the Magic's opener?

Wagner is listed day-to-day with a right shoulder issue and an estimated return of October 21. The team said it will keep evaluating him.
