Reading Denver's Rumor Mill: What the Confidence Scores Actually Predict

The month's rumors say more about Denver's roster margins than about any move worth worrying over.

By the Nuggets Nightly Desk · Wednesday, September 30

September produced nine reports about Denver's fringe roster, and the ones rated most confident were also the ones that reversed fastest. The newest, a Ryan Nembhard two-way signing, fits a pattern the team's spending has already set: whatever comes next has to be cheap.

What's new today

Hoops Rumors reported Sept. 30 that Ryan Nembhard is set to sign a two-way contract with Denver, and RealGM separately flagged him as a player attracting interest from the Nuggets the same day. Two outlets, same day, no numbers attached — that's about as corroborated as an open report gets without confirmation. A two-way deal doesn't touch the cap in any meaningful way, which is exactly why it's the kind of move Denver can still make.

The confidence scores this month, graded

Cam Whitmore's move from radar report (confidence 68, Sept. 15) to signed two-way (confidence 82, Sept. 18, via Shams Charania) played out almost exactly as scored, and he's stuck. Boopie Miller's Exhibit 10 deal carried a similar confidence of 77 on Sept. 22 and also came true — then unwound within a day. A lower-rated roster-moves report at 46 on Sept. 21 matched two arrivals who were also gone inside 48 hours. High confidence predicted the signing, not whether the player stayed.

Why nothing bigger is coming

At $221.1 million, Denver already sits above the first-apron threshold, closer to the second apron than to the tax line beneath it. That leaves minimums, Exhibit 10s and two-way slots as the only realistic additions — the tier where September's churn has lived: Curtis Jones, David Roddy, Reese Dixon-Waters, Keonte Jones and Miller all moved through those same restricted lanes. Nembhard fits the same mold.

The report that actually matters

The rumor with real weight isn't about the roster margins at all: Nikola Jokic told reporters at media day, per Bennett Durando, that he plans to sign an extension with Denver next summer — a claim covered independently by The Athletic, ESPN, RealGM and Hoops Rumors. That's five sources pointing at the same quote, a different kind of confirmation than any confidence score. Next to that, whether Nembhard's two-way holds is a footnote.

Is Ryan Nembhard actually signing with the Nuggets?

As of Sept. 30, Hoops Rumors and RealGM both reported an impending two-way deal or interest, but Denver has not confirmed it, so the report remains open.

Can Denver still make trades this season?

Payroll of $221.1 million sits just under the $221.7 million second apron, which restricts salary aggregation in trades and leaves Denver realistically limited to minimum and two-way additions.
