Camp Coverage Is About the Fringes. The Real Nuggets Questions Aren't.

Denver's beat writers are deep into camp-battle coverage for the roster's edges, while the two questions that actually matter — Aaron Gordon's health and Christian Braun's jump shot — are getting quieter treatment.

By the Nuggets Nightly Desk · Friday, October 2

Camp dispatches this week leaned hard on depth additions, Ryan Nembhard and Cam Whitmore chief among them. The storylines worth tracking — Gordon's availability and whether Braun's three-point shot rebounds — are in the coverage too, just with less volume.

Who's winning the guard battles?

Mile High Sports' Ryan Blackburn and Nugg Love's Ben Handler and David Decker have spent the week on Denver's crowded guard room — Ryan Nembhard's fit in the point guard rotation, Alpha Diallo's camp standout turn. The attention tracks: Nembhard and Diallo are both on the active roster, and Nuggets.com, RealGM and Hoops Rumors confirmed Nembhard's two-way contract this week. It doesn't touch the rotation spot that counts in April, where Tyus Jones still holds the backup minutes, but it explains why camp coverage keeps circling the bench.

Does the Whitmore buzz hold up?

Blackburn and Decker have also flagged Cam Whitmore turning heads in camp, Decker writing that Denver gives him the environment to develop. That one matches a real need: Whitmore arrived in the September trade that sent Bruce Brown to the Knicks, and Denver's wing depth behind Cameron Johnson and Christian Braun was thin the moment Brown left. Of this week's camp stories, it's the one with the clearest roster logic behind it.

What about Gordon's health?

Decker also reported that Denver changed Aaron Gordon's routine specifically to keep him on the floor — a story with more riding on it than any camp battle, since Gordon's availability was the one real uncertainty hanging over this roster in September. The current injury report lists only Trevon Brazile, day-to-day with an expected return of October 4; Gordon isn't on it. That's consistent with Decker's framing, though his status flipped twice in a single week last month, so one clean list in October doesn't fully settle it.

Why does Braun's shot matter more?

Decker's case for a Christian Braun bounce back is the storyline with real weight, because last season's split explains the hope: 30.1 percent from three in 44 games, a dip Denver felt in an offense that otherwise ranked first in the league. A jump there changes Denver's spacing in a way none of the backcourt battles do. It just reads quieter than Nembhard or Diallo because it isn't a new name.

Is Aaron Gordon healthy heading into camp?

Denver's current injury list doesn't include him, and Nugg Love reported the team adjusted his routine to keep him on the floor, but his designation flipped twice in September, so it isn't fully resolved.

Is Ryan Nembhard's contract with the Nuggets confirmed?

Yes — Nuggets.com, RealGM and Hoops Rumors all confirmed his two-way contract on September 30, and he's listed on Denver's active roster.
