The Big Question: Can San Antonio Win Now and Still Grow Up?

A 62-win team with a Finals loss to answer for enters the season with its bench still being rebuilt.

San Antonio comes off a 62-20 season and its first Finals trip since 2014, with Victor Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell all signed through next season. The roster around them has barely stopped moving, which raises the real question hanging over opening week: can a team built to win right now also finish developing while it does it?

Is this a win-now roster or a building one?

Both, and that's the tension. The core four are locked in, payroll sits at $198.3M against a $200.4M tax line, and last season produced the second-best net rating in the league and a Finals berth. But the front office also just exercised 2027/28 options on Castle, Harper and Bryant, betting on players who haven't played a real NBA game yet.

Can the bench hold up after six roster moves in four days?

R.J. Davis signed, then left October 14. Terry Taylor joined and left within a day. Kendall Brown joined and was waived. Jon Elmore and Malik Williams are both gone. That much turnover this close to the opener leaves the group behind Fox, Vassell, Wembanyama and Castle still undefined heading into October 20.

Which rookies are actually ready to help?

Dylan Harper has scored in every preseason outing — 16, 15, 19 points — and is the only rookie with a track record so far. Carter Bryant has one line, 8 points on October 14. Jones Garcia, Gillespie and Quaintance remain scoreless, and Taelon Peter left the roster October 15 without ever getting a number.

Has the starting lineup actually been settled?

Not on paper. An October 17 report floated the idea of playing three guards together and named Fox, Keldon Johnson and Harris in connection with it, but stopped short of saying who starts. Three separate roundups since October 13 grouped San Antonio with other teams on minor moves without any lineup specifics attached.

How much does health already complicate the answer?

Harris has been day-to-day with a calf issue since October 4, with no update since confirming a return or an absence. Fox, cleared October 14 after his own day-to-day stretch, looks fine for now. Preseason ended with back-to-back wins, 123-103 over Phoenix and 126-97 over Sacramento, but neither tells San Antonio who it's missing once the games count.

The verdictSan Antonio has the top of its roster locked down and the record to justify a title push, but the pieces underneath it are still shifting days before the games count. October 20 against Oklahoma City is the first chance to see if those two truths can coexist.
When does the Spurs' 2026-27 season start?

The regular season opens October 20 against Oklahoma City, airing on NBC/Peacock.

What is Tobias Harris's current health status?

Harris has been listed day-to-day with a calf injury since October 4, and there has been no update confirming his status since.
