Why does the Thunder opener matter more than a normal first game?

Oklahoma City won 64 games last season with a net rating of 11.1, the best number in this matchup. San Antonio won 62 at 8.4 and eliminated the Thunder in a seven-game conference finals. The game is Tuesday, October 20, on NBC and Peacock. Both teams are 0-0, so last season's results are the only evidence either side has.

Will Tobias Harris be back for Tuesday?

He carries an estimated return of October 20 for his left calf, but no update has confirmed him on the floor. He averaged 13.3 points last season. A report from October 18 tied Harris, Fox and Keldon Johnson to a three-guard look without naming starters. Jayden Quaintance is the only Spur ruled out, with a knee injury and an estimated return of December 1.

Who is Oklahoma City missing?

Otega Oweh is out with a right Achilles injury. Chet Holmgren (quadriceps), Cason Wallace (undisclosed), Jaylin Williams (heel), Nikola Topic (back) and Thomas Sorber (knee) are all listed as day-to-day. Holmgren averaged 17.1 points and 8.9 rebounds last season. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, at 31.1 points, is not on the list. The Thunder arrive on the second game of a road trip after four days of rest.

How does the rest of the week look?

San Antonio has three days of rest before the opener, then three more before Houston visits Friday, October 23, on Prime Video. The next night the Spurs are at Dallas, the week's only consecutive-night pair and the first road game of the season. Sacramento visits on Tuesday, October 27. That is four games in eight days.

Is Devin Vassell getting an extension?

Paul Garcia of The Spot Up Shot wrote that Monday is the last day this cycle for Vassell and the Spurs to agree on an extension. He has three years left on a $27.0 million deal and could add up to two. No agreement has been reported. San Antonio sits $2.1 million under the luxury tax line of $200.4 million.

The verdictThe opener tests whether last spring's series result carries over against a deeper Oklahoma City team that is missing several rotation pieces. Harris's status and the Dallas game on the second night of the Houston-Dallas pair are the two things to watch.
When do the Spurs open the 2026-27 season?

The Spurs host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, October 20, on NBC and Peacock.

Are the Spurs playing on consecutive nights this week?

Yes. They host the Rockets on Friday, October 23, then travel to face the Mavericks on Saturday, October 24.
