Nick Nurse said Joel Embiid went through Monday's first training camp practice as a full participant, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Gina Mizell. That is the only new fact in camp so far; the roster, the money and the schedule are the rest of the story.

So Embiid is healthy?

Nurse used two words fans wanted to hear: full participant. That covers one practice on Monday, not a season. Embiid played only 38 games last season, averaging 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds when he was on the floor. One good day at the start of camp does not erase two years of load management; it just means camp opened without him watching from the sideline.

What happened to the guard depth?

MarJon Beauchamp, Tyrese Martin and Kyle Lowry are off the roster as of September 21. No replacement has been added at guard since. That leaves Maxey, Edgecombe, Simons, Caldwell-Pope and rookie Labaron Philon to cover the backcourt minutes those three used to soak up, with training camp now the only audition left before the opener.

Is Bona ready for camp?

Adem Bona has been out since September 17 with a lower-leg issue that starts in his foot, officially unavailable for full team work. His estimated return is October 1, which lines him up for the second preseason game at Brooklyn but not the first, at home against the Knicks on October 5. Camp opens with a hole at backup center until that clears.

When's the first game that actually counts?

Preseason opens October 5 against the Knicks, then trips to Brooklyn on the 8th and Boston on the 10th, with Boston coming back to Philadelphia on the 16th. The regular-season opener is October 20 at Madison Square Garden against New York, airing on NBC and Peacock. Four preseason games, then four days until the schedule means anything.

What does this roster cost, and is there room to fix it midseason?

The 76ers carry $213.2 million in salary, already past the $200.4 million tax line and into the first apron. Embiid ($58.1 million), Jaylen Brown ($57.1 million) and Maxey ($40.8 million) account for most of it. Above the apron means no taking back extra salary in trades and no biannual exception, so Bob Myers built this roster with almost no room left to fix anything in season.

The verdictOne padded practice report does not change the math: this team is $213.2 million deep and still hasn't played a game that counts. The apron bill came before the health news, and it's not going anywhere.
Is Joel Embiid healthy for the 2026-27 season opener?

He was a full participant in the first training camp practice on September 29, per head coach Nick Nurse. The opener is still three weeks away, on October 20 at the Knicks.

Why are MarJon Beauchamp, Tyrese Martin and Kyle Lowry no longer on the roster?

All three left the roster on September 21, without a like-for-like replacement added since. That's the depth Philadelphia opens camp with at guard.
