Dean Wade's Job: Space the Floor, Plug the Five

He posted a plus-6.2 net rating on 9.7 percent usage. The 76ers need him to do more with it.

Dean Wade is not a name anyone chants, but his shooting and switchability made him one of Philadelphia's most efficient regulars last season. With Ariel Hukporti out for the year and the roster already past the first apron, Wade's $9.0 million deal and his ability to slide to center matter more than his box score ever will.

What does Dean Wade actually do for this roster?

Wade is the stretch four who holds the back line together, not a scorer. Fifty-nine games, 22.3 minutes, 5.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 36.2 percent from three on 3.3 attempts a night. That volume reads thin next to Maxey or Brown, but Wade was never meant to create. He finishes what the stars start.

Why do the advanced numbers matter more than his box score?

His true shooting sat at 58.0 percent and his net rating hit plus-6.2 across those 59 games, even on 9.7 percent usage, the lowest shot share among regulars on this roster. Those numbers argue Philadelphia was a better team with Wade on the floor than the box score alone suggests. Efficient, low-touch, hard to replace.

Does his forward-center listing mean he'll play real minutes at the five?

He's listed at forward-center, and that matters more this month than it did in July. A defensive rating of 110.9 and a 9.0 percent rebound rate last season are modest for a true five, but they're real NBA minutes Nurse can lean on at either forward spot or in a smaller frontcourt look when Embiid sits.

Why does his contract matter against the tax line?

Wade signed for $9.0 million this season, climbing to $9.4 million, then $9.9 million, then $10.3 million by 2029-30. Modest by star standards, but enough to rank him Philadelphia's fifth-largest contract on a $213.2 million payroll already past the $200.4 million tax line. Role players don't usually carry that kind of cap weight here.

Is Wade healthy for the opener at Brooklyn?

He is not on the injury report. Everyone else carries some flag into that game: Hukporti out for the season, Bona, Barlow, Fall and Simons unresolved, Embiid and James nursing rest rather than injury. Wade has none of it, which by this roster's standards counts as a clean bill of health.

The verdictDean Wade doesn't need a bigger role to matter — he needs to keep making a plus-6.2 impact repeat itself across more minutes, including whatever time Nurse hands him at center behind Embiid. He's priced like a rotation piece the front office values; now he has to stay healthy enough, every night, to prove the number wasn't a fluke.
How much is Dean Wade making this season?

He's set to earn $9.0 million in 2026-27, rising to $10.3 million by 2029-30 — enough to make him Philadelphia's fifth-biggest contract.

Is Dean Wade injured ahead of the preseason game at Brooklyn?

No. He is not listed on the 76ers' injury report, unlike several regulars heading into that game.
