Rumor Check: Grading Four Reports Against a Crowded Cap Sheet

Four early reports, scored for confidence and status, tested against $191.4 million already committed.

By the Bucks Nightly Desk · Monday, October 12

One of the four reports checked here is confirmed; the other three carry open status, with confidence scores from 20 to 38, and the transaction record has already passed one of them by. None of it bends far against a payroll already $191.4 million deep, over the cap and closing on the tax line.

Sept. 17

A hoopsrumors report dated Sept. 17 said the Bucks had signed Jake Stephens, carrying a confidence score of 20 and marked open. That is thin sourcing for a low-profile center signing. Stephens is now listed on Milwaukee's roster, but the report itself was never upgraded to confirmed.

Sept. 23

Joe Vardon's Sept. 23 report on the NBA's probe into Milwaukee's trade for Trent Jr. carries a confidence score of 27, still marked open. No outlet has added detail since. Trent Jr. himself is locked into the rotation and into a $15.2 million salary, one of the roster's five largest contracts.

Oct. 6

An Oct. 6 hoopsrumors item reported Milwaukee's signing of Johni Broome, at confidence 38, still marked open. That status sits oddly next to the transaction record, which already lists Broome on the active roster at forward in place of John Butler Jr. The report has not caught up to the roster.

Oct. 11

The most recent entry, from Oct. 11, reported seven NBA clubs carrying open two-way contract slots heading into 2026-27, and it is marked confirmed, the only one of the four with that rating. Whether Milwaukee counts as one of the seven is not specified in the reporting as sourced.

Right now

None of it moves far without room. Milwaukee carries $191.4 million in salary, over the $165.0 million cap and under the $200.4 million tax line, with roughly nine million before that line and the $209.0 million first apron beyond it. Herro's $33.0 million and Turner's $26.6 million anchor that number; any further addition would have to be modest.

Next Milwaukee's next game is Wednesday, Oct. 14, against the Bulls; the regular-season opener at Washington on Oct. 21 is the point by which any roster move tied to these reports would need to clear.
Is Gary Trent Jr.'s trade actually under NBA investigation?

Joe Vardon reported a probe into the trade on Sept. 23, at a confidence score of 27 and marked open; no outlet has reported further detail since.

Did the Bucks confirm signing Johni Broome?

A hoopsrumors report on Oct. 6 carries a confidence score of 38 and is still marked open, though Broome already appears on Milwaukee's active roster.
