Four Things Cavs Fans Are Actually Asking Right Now

Mitchell's new Adidas deal, Watson's hamstring clock and Weems' only move so far.

4 questions
By the Cavaliers Nightly Desk · Friday, October 2

Donovan Mitchell signed a new multiyear shoe deal with Adidas on Oct. 1, per ESPN's Shams Charania, while Cleveland sits at 0-0 waiting on its Oct. 8 preseason opener against Boston. Peyton Watson's hamstring and new general manager Brandon Weems' lone roster move are the two threads actually worth tracking before then.

Does Donovan Mitchell's new shoe deal mean anything for the Cavs?

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Oct. 1 that Mitchell signed a new multiyear deal with Adidas. It's a footwear contract, not a basketball transaction — nothing about his standing with Cleveland changes, no trade talk is attached, and no further detail on term or value came with the report. It has no bearing on the 0-0 record or the preseason schedule.

When does Peyton Watson come back, and does he play the preseason opener?

Watson has been day-to-day with a right hamstring issue since Sept. 25, with an estimated return of Oct. 8 — the same date Cleveland opens its preseason at home against Boston. No update has followed since the original listing, so whether he actually suits up that night is still unconfirmed.

What has new general manager Brandon Weems actually done so far?

Weems was promoted Sept. 18, and the only move since is adding four players Sept. 23: Kadary Richmond, Zack Austin, Rashaun Agee and Curtis Jones. No role, minutes plan or contract terms have come out for the group, so training camp in Spain is the first real look at where they fit.

Is anyone going to explain what happened with Sean McNeil?

McNeil signed Sept. 15 and was gone by Sept. 17, a two-day stay with no explanation given then or since. His next stop hasn't been reported either, so for now it reads like a roster-paperwork move rather than a basketball decision Cleveland wanted to talk about.

The verdictNone of this moves the record off 0-0. Watson's hamstring and Weems' next move are the two things actually worth watching before the preseason opener Oct. 8.
When is Peyton Watson expected back?

He's day-to-day with a right hamstring issue reported Sept. 25, with an estimated return of Oct. 8 against Boston.

Has Brandon Weems made any trades as Cavs GM?

No trades have been reported. His only move was adding four players, Richmond, Austin, Agee and Jones, on Sept. 23.
