Cavs Questions: A Magic Doubleheader Buys Health Time Before It Counts

Two preseason games against Orlando, a crowded injury list and a payroll already over the tax line.

Cleveland plays Orlando twice this week before the schedule turns real on Oct. 22 in Philadelphia. Three players carry the same Oct. 11 injury estimate, and the roster just grew again with two camp-deal signings.

What does Cleveland's week actually look like?

Two preseason tune-ups against Orlando: tonight at home on ESPN, then a trip south for the rematch on Oct. 13 on Peacock/NBC Sports Network. Cleveland goes into tonight on two days of rest with no back-to-back scheduled. After that, the calendar goes dark until the games that count: Oct. 22 at Philadelphia on ESPN, then home against Brooklyn on Oct. 24.

Who else is missing time besides Harden?

Harden's sore right ankle carries an estimated return of today. He's not alone — Khalifa Diop (undisclosed) and Nae'Qwan Tomlin (back) both picked up the same Oct. 11 target after Thursday's loss to Boston. An estimate is a target date, not a guarantee any of the three actually suits up.

What is Orlando bringing to Rocket Arena?

Sean Sweeney's Magic went 45-37 last season behind Paolo Banchero (22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds), Desmond Bane (20.1) and Franz Wagner (20.6 in just 34 games). They have their own injury list: Jalen Suggs (illness), Anthony Black (ankle) and Jonathan Isaac (knee) are questionable, and Izaiyah Nelson is out with a left ankle injury.

Is the roster still adding names?

Yes. Jaxson Robinson and Noam Yaacov signed camp deals on Oct. 9, a move Hoopsrumors attributed to Paul Garcia, pushing the roster to 23 with no word yet on what role either player actually fills. That comes as Cleveland's payroll already sits at $209.0 million, above the $200.4 million luxury tax line.

Should the Celtics loss change anyone's mood?

Not yet. One preseason game, a 113-124 defeat in which Jaylon Tyson scored 14 and Tristan Enaruna added 13, tells you who shows up, not who wins in April. Two more preseason looks at Orlando come before anything on the schedule actually counts toward the standings.

The verdictThe name to watch this week isn't Orlando, it's the trainer's room — Harden, Diop and Tomlin all share the same Oct. 11 target, and the real read on this roster waits for Oct. 22 in Philadelphia.
When do the Cavaliers play a game that counts?

Oct. 22, on the road against Philadelphia, airing on ESPN — the first game of the actual 2026-27 season.

Is James Harden playing against the Magic tonight?

His right ankle issue carries an Oct. 11 return estimate, which lines up with tonight, but that's a target date, not a confirmed clearance.
