Who is Tre'Von Spillers, and why does it matter now?

Spillers joined the Cavaliers on Oct. 17, the only roster move in the last 36 hours. He's a rookie with no NBA regular-season games on his record, signed with five days left before the opener. The move pushes Cleveland's roster to 21 players, and nothing about his role or a contract length has been reported yet.

Which players are still working back from injury before Philadelphia?

Khalifa Diop's left knee, Nae'Qwan Tomlin's back and Sam Merrill's right elbow are the three issues Cleveland is managing, and the team is aiming to have everyone ready for Oct. 22 against the 76ers. None has missed real game action yet, since Cleveland's season hasn't started.

Does the 1-2 preseason mean anything heading into opening night?

Preseason doesn't count, and Cleveland's record is officially 0-0 with the season still ahead. The real warning sign belongs to last season: a team that outscored opponents by 2.8 points a game across the full schedule collapsed to a minus-5.7 margin over its final 10 games. Camp results this month didn't settle whether that fade was a one-time slide or something more permanent.

What does the payroll look like with the roster now full?

Cleveland's bill sits at $209.0 million, above the threshold the NBA sets for the tax this year at $200.4 million. Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley each account for $50.1 million of that figure on their own. Adding Spillers doesn't move the number much, but it's one more name the front office has to account for against that threshold.

How thin is Cleveland's draft cushion if this roster needs retooling?

Not thin, bare: Cleveland doesn't fully own a first-rounder in 2027, 2028 or 2029 - each one is part of a swap - and the seconds those same years go to Chicago, Utah and Atlanta. The only completely unencumbered pick left is the 2030 first-rounder. Whatever retooling happens here has to happen with the players already on the roster.

The verdictOne addition doesn't change the picture: Cleveland's opener is five days out, three regulars are still working back, and the bill keeps climbing with no flexibility behind it. The bigger question is whether last season's late fade was a blip or a preview.
Is Tre'Von Spillers on Cleveland's regular-season roster?

He signed with the Cavaliers on Oct. 17, but no decision on the regular-season roster has been reported yet.

When do the Cavaliers play their first regular-season game?

Oct. 22 at Philadelphia, broadcast on ESPN.
