Preseason Clock Starts While One Roster Spot Stays Blank

Five days to Cleveland, and the open two-way slot still has no name attached.

By the Celtics Nightly Desk · Saturday, October 3

The only movement in the past day and a half was two confidence-score adjustments on rumors already filed, one of them about a signing that came and went weeks ago. The real clock starts October 8, when Boston opens preseason at Cleveland with its two-way roster spot still unnamed.

Preseason arrives before answers do.

Boston opens the preseason slate October 8 at Cleveland, followed by the 76ers at home October 10 on NBA TV, the Hornets October 14, and a return trip to Philadelphia October 16, also on NBA TV. The regular season opens October 20 at Detroit. None of it answers who claims the open two-way contract.

The two-way spot is still unclaimed.

That slot was flagged open September 12. Since then the roster turned over twice: Shulga's exit on September 21, then the additions of Hayden Gray and Gabe McGlothan on September 23. No report has tied either addition to the open spot, which remains unfilled three weeks later.

Tatum's injury tag vanished almost as fast as it appeared.

Tatum received an injury listing on September 24 and was cleared before day's end, with no cause given in either report.

The payroll sits above the tax before a single game tips off.

Boston carries $203.9 million in salary against a $200.4 million threshold, already into tax territory and closing in on a $209.0 million apron. Four of the five largest contracts belong to Tatum, George, White and Robinson, none of them cheap depth.

When do the Celtics play their first preseason game?

October 8 on the road against Cleveland, the first of four preseason games before the October 20 opener at Detroit.

Is the Celtics' two-way roster spot filled yet?

Not as of this week. It has been open since September 12, and two subsequent roster moves have not been tied to it.
