Rumor Check: One Open Report, Two Already Stale

Pritchard's reported deal still carries a confidence score, not a signature; two other items add nothing new.

By the Celtics Nightly Desk · Thursday, October 15

Three rumor reports are circulating this week, and only one still has weight. Charania's report on Pritchard carries a confidence score of 69 and remains open, against a payroll already above the tax line.

69: Pritchard report confidence
1

The Pritchard report still carries a number instead of a signature.

Shams Charania reported on October 13 that Pritchard and Boston agreed to a new deal. The tracking confidence on that report is 69, and its status reads open, not confirmed. Boston.com and MassLive both covered the same report that week, but neither outlet added a signed date or terms. Boston's payroll already runs $203.9M, above the $200.4M luxury tax line and closing in on the $209.0 million first apron; retaining your own free agent does not raise that number the way an outside signing would, but it does lock one more contract against those lines.

2

The two-way report is confirmed, but it is not about Boston.

A report dated October 11 says seven teams around the league have open two-way slots, and it is marked confirmed. Boston's own second two-way spot is a separate matter: it has sat open since September 12, through the swap that sent Max Shulga out and brought in Hayden Gray and Gabe McGlothan, and through both preseason wins since. The confirmed report names no teams, so it proves nothing about whether Boston is among them.

3

The September grouping added no names after it ran.

A September 24 item titled Minor Transactions grouped Boston with the Jazz, Nuggets, Spurs, Trail Blazers, Timberwolves and Cavaliers. It is marked confirmed, but it carries no detail beyond the grouping itself, and nothing since has filled in what applied to Boston specifically. Three weeks and two preseason wins later, it still reads the same way.

4

Of three reports, one is still worth watching.

The two-way and transaction items are settled, confirmed facts that say nothing new about Boston specifically. Pritchard's reported extension is the one that would change the roster, and it is still open. Treat it as reported, not done, until that status changes.

Is Payton Pritchard's contract extension official?

Shams Charania reported the agreement on October 13, but it carries a confidence score of 69 and remains open, not confirmed.

Does Boston have an open two-way contract spot?

Yes, the second two-way slot has sat unfilled since September 12, even after the Gray and McGlothan additions and two preseason games.
