Mike Conley starts his 20th season on a $2.4M deal, healthy, in a backcourt led by Derrick White and Payton Pritchard. Last season his value came from the mistakes he avoided, not the numbers he produced, and Boston needs that version in short, clean stretches.

His job is insurance for a thinner backcourt.
Boston's guards are White, Pritchard, Baylor Scheierman, Hugo Gonzalez, Jordan Walsh and Ron Harper Jr. Devin Carter is sidelined by illness, and his estimated return is November 8. Conley is 39, the oldest player on the roster, with 19 years of experience. He was listed for rest on October 16 and cleared the next day, and he is not on the injury report now. He was not in either of Boston's closing groups in Detroit, so his place in the rotation is still unsettled.
The ball stays safe when he has it.
Last season he played 54 games at 18.4 minutes, with 4.5 points, 2.9 assists and 0.6 turnovers. That is close to five assists for every giveaway. His assist percentage was 20.5% on 11.3% usage, which describes a guard who organizes possessions instead of finishing them. The caveat is that turnovers stay low when the creating role stays small, so the ratio shows discipline more than it shows range. In Detroit, the five Celtics who committed two or more turnovers combined for 13, and the Pistons closed with a 23-0 run. One reserve guard does not fix that, but a steady one helps.
The jumper decides how long he stays on the floor.
He shot 33.5% from the field and 33.7% on 3.1 three-point attempts per game, for 51.7% true shooting. The 90.0% at the free-throw line says the stroke is still there. The three-point number says defenses can leave him open. Last season Sam Hauser made 39.3% of his threes, Scheierman 39.9% and Pritchard 37.7%, so Conley is the weakest shooter in that group. His on-court ratings were 112.3 on offense and 112.1 on defense, which is break-even. Without any lineup data, those numbers can't show which teammates helped him and which held him back.
Boston needs ten clean minutes from him, not a revival.
At $2.4M for 2026-27, Conley is paid to fill gaps, and his role should match that. Boston already has a 36-year-old who scored 38 in the opener, so it doesn't need another comeback story. The verdict: Conley should be the backup ball handler who keeps leads intact, gets the offense into its sets and takes open threes without hesitating. If he shoots near his 33.7% from last season, his minutes will go to Scheierman or Gonzalez. The Knicks come to Boston on Friday.
Is Mike Conley injured?
No. He was listed day-to-day for rest on October 16, cleared on October 17, and is not on the current injury report.
How much is Mike Conley paid by the Celtics this season?
His salary for 2026-27 is $2.4M, which makes him a low-cost depth guard on a payroll that sits just under the luxury tax.
