Rumor Check: Low Scores, No Trade Signal Yet

Five recent reports carry confidence scores in the 30s and 40s — transactional notes, not a deal in motion.

By the Clippers Nightly Desk · Friday, October 9

The week's Clippers rumor crop is short on confidence and short on specifics: four separate reports since Oct. 5 all scored in the 30s and low 40s, grouping the team with other clubs' minor moves rather than naming an actual target. The one report with real weight — Strus's expected four-week absence — has no new corroboration since it posted, and the cap sheet gives the front office little margin to turn any of this into a deal.

44: Oct 8 report confidence
1

This week's reports are grouped notes, not trade threads.

The Oct. 8 report, 'Minor Roster Moves: Clippers, Blazers, Kings,' carries a confidence score of 44 and landed the day Jahmyl Telfort joined the roster, without naming anything else that changed. A day earlier, 'Jazz Waive Brown, Clippers Waive Loyer' scored 42 and simply confirmed Fletcher Loyer's departure alongside Utah's own release of Brown. Both reports remain open, meaning neither has drawn a follow-up or been closed out since it posted.

2

Johni Broome's market closed somewhere other than Los Angeles.

The Oct. 6 report 'Bucks Sign Johni Broome' scored 42 and ends any thread tying the center to the Clippers; Milwaukee signed him, not the front office here. Whatever appetite existed for Broome around this roster did not survive contact with an actual contract.

3

Strus's absence is the one note worth tracking.

The Oct. 5 report projecting at least four weeks out for Strus and his right foot scored 41 and is still open, with no follow-up report since. That makes it the only item in this stretch that touches an active roster spot rather than a name on someone else's depth chart.

None of it changes what the cap sheet allows.

Payroll is logged at $193.7M, over the cap and under the $200.4M tax line, with Garland's $42.2M and Ingram's $40.0M the two largest numbers on the books, followed by Strus at $16.7M and Hachimura at $14.0M. Add in draft capital already pledged through swaps in 2027, 2028 and 2030, plus picks owed outright to Utah and San Antonio, and there is little margin left to attach to any of these reports even if one of them firmed up.

Are the Clippers close to making a trade right now?

Not based on anything reported this week — the four items since Oct. 5 are low-confidence transactional notes, not trade threads, and none has drawn a follow-up.

Did the Clippers sign Johni Broome?

No. Broome signed with the Milwaukee Bucks on Oct. 6, closing out the speculation that had linked him to Los Angeles.
