A Preseason Trip to Toronto Finds Leonard on the Other Bench

Telfort joins the roster as Toronto brings Kawhi Leonard back across the floor, with return dates landing tonight.

By the Clippers Nightly Desk · Friday, October 9

The Clippers add guard Jahmyl Telfort to the roster before a preseason trip to Toronto, where Kawhi Leonard now plays for the team that received him in September's trade. Beal and Sanders each carry an estimated return date of October 10, while Ingram's partially torn Achilles keeps him out until at least November 1.

Leonard lines up across from the team he left.

Toronto hosts the Clippers in preseason play on October 10, with Kawhi Leonard now wearing a Raptors jersey after the September 14 trade that sent him north for Brandon Ingram and a package of picks that also returned Gradey Dick. Darko Rajakovic's Raptors went 46-36 last season, with Scottie Barnes at 18.1 points a game and Leonard at 27.9. Ingram now anchors the frontcourt he was traded for, though he still hasn't played a game in it.

Two return targets share tonight's date.

Beal, day-to-day with a knee issue, and Sanders, day-to-day with a left hip issue, both carry an estimated return of October 10 into tonight's game. Neither tag confirms either will suit up, only that the team's own target lines up with tip-off. Strus remains out with a right foot and leg issue until November 2, and Miller's shoulder keeps him out into next March.

Telfort's signing is a camp move, not a cap statement.

Jahmyl Telfort joined the Clippers on October 8, the latest name cycling through a roster still finding its shape before the October 21 opener against the Kings. Payroll sits at $193.7 million, over the cap and under the $200.4 million tax line. The larger bill from September's trade is the bigger number: swap rights in 2027, 2028 and 2030, a forfeited 2029 and 2030 first-rounder, and second-round picks already assigned to Utah and San Antonio.

Rest favors Toronto before both teams turn over quickly.

The Raptors carry six rest days into this one against the Clippers' five, and both teams move on fast: Toronto in three days, the Clippers in four, when Denver visits October 14 on NBA TV. The simpler question is whether Sanders and Beal are full participants tonight, or whether their return dates slide the way Strus's already has.

Is Brandon Ingram playing against the Raptors?

No. Ingram's partially torn Achilles has an estimated return date of November 1, after the regular season opens on October 21.

What happened with Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers?

Leonard was traded to Toronto on September 14 in a deal built around Brandon Ingram, with Gradey Dick and a package of picks also changing hands; he now plays for the Raptors team the Clippers face on October 10.
