Heat Rumors Check Out, Cap Sheet Says No More Moves

Low confidence reports on Schieffelin and Smith told the real story; the apron tells what comes next.

Three weeks after a confidence-20 signing report, Ian Schieffelin is already off the roster, while a confidence-23 report on Dennis Smith Jr. still has no matching name in the lineup. Miami's payroll sits at $209.1M, above the $209.0M first apron, which leaves little room to turn any open report into an actual roster spot.

Schieffelin Checks Out

The Heat signed Ian Schieffelin to an Exhibit 10 deal on September 25 at a confidence score of just 20, the lowest number on the board. That low grade held up: Schieffelin left the Heat on October 16, the day Miami closed out the preseason at Orlando.

Mbeng Claim Holds

Miami's waiver claim on Bez Mbeng, reported September 22 via Anthony Chiang at a confidence score of 25, has held: Mbeng remains on the 20-man roster. A modest grade did not mean the move was wrong.

Smith Report Stalls

The September 27 report that the Heat would sign Dennis Smith Jr. carried a confidence score of 23 and is still marked open three weeks later. His name is not on Miami's current roster.

Cap Sheet Says No

Hoops Rumors logged a confirmed Minor Transactions note on the Heat October 16 at a confidence score of 45, the highest mark on the board, but it landed the same day Schieffelin left, not a new arrival. An October 9 report on Heat-Nets moves, via Anthony Chiang, also came back confirmed. A September 29 note tying Miami to the Hawks, Hornets and Pistons never specified a name and still sits open at a confidence score of 24. Miami's payroll sits at $209.1M, above the $209.0M first apron and the $200.4M luxury tax line.

Verdict: No Room

With a protected 2027 first and a conditional 2028 first already owed to Charlotte, and the payroll pinned above the apron, every open report on this board needs an outgoing salary to match before it becomes a transaction. Confidence scores are a guide, not a guarantee; the roster sheet still decides.

Is Ian Schieffelin still on the Heat roster?

No. Schieffelin signed an Exhibit 10 deal on September 25 and left the team on October 16.

Did the Heat sign Dennis Smith Jr.?

The report is still marked open at a confidence score of 23, and his name is not on Miami's current roster.
