Luka Returns, but the Lakers' Countdown Gets Complicated

A rest-day return, a lopsided finale loss, and a Buss family court fight collide before October 21.

The Lakers closed the preseason with their second straight loss, falling 121-106 to Denver with Doncic back from a rest day but limited to 19 minutes. Four days before the regular-season opener, the roster and the boardroom both have unresolved questions.

Back, Briefly

Doncic was cleared off the rest-day listing and started the preseason finale, but logged only 19 minutes, scoring 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting with three 3-pointers. Denver's bench pulled away in the fourth quarter as the Lakers fell to their second straight loss, 121-106. Reaves led all scorers with 19 points but turned it over six times and finished minus-20.

Grimes' Role, Unsettled

Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times reported Redick is still weighing what Quentin Grimes' role looks like once games count. Grimes scored 11 points off the bench against Denver, going 4 of 9 from the field. Redick has not said whether that spot holds once the regular season opens.

A Fight Off the Court

ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported the Buss siblings filed to challenge Jeanie Buss's petition to remove them as trustees, and the Los Angeles Times' Thuc Nhi Nguyen reported the family is asking a judge to dismiss her bid to block the sale of the team. Neither filing touches the roster, but both now hang over a franchise days from tipping off for real.

When do the Lakers play their regular-season opener?

October 21 against the Warriors, broadcast on ESPN.

He was cleared off the rest-day listing and played 19 minutes in the preseason finale, scoring 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting.
