Six numbers that frame Orlando's opener against Atlanta

A break-even margin, Wagner's 34 games, Bane's 82 and a payroll over the tax line set the terms.

By the Magic Nightly Desk · Wednesday, October 21

Orlando went 45-37 last season with a 0.6 net rating, a margin built mostly on defense and without Franz Wagner for much of the year. The opener against the Hawks starts the test of whether a healthier core can turn that thin edge into a real one.

0.6: Net rating, last season
1

Last season's margin says Orlando broke even.

The Magic posted a 114.2 offensive rating and a 113.6 defensive rating last season. That 0.6 net rating ranked 17th, and the defense ranked 13th, ahead of the offense at 17th. That means they won with stops, not shot-making. It does not set a ceiling for this group, because Franz Wagner barely played. Atlanta finished 46-36 at 2.2 and played at a 102.5 pace, quicker than Orlando's 100.6. Tonight is a contest over tempo as much as talent.

Wagner's games played matter more than his scoring average.

Wagner averaged 20.6 points last season but appeared in only 34 games. A right shoulder issue put him on the October injury report, and he was cleared on October 20. Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel reported that Wagner practiced fully and plans to play. The 0.6 margin mostly measured a team without him next to Paolo Banchero. Thirty-four games is a sample, not proof that he is fragile.

3

Bane is the steadiest piece Orlando has.

Desmond Bane played all 82 games last season, scoring 20.1 points a night and shooting 39.1 percent from three. Banchero shot 30.5, Jalen Suggs 33.9 and Anthony Black 33.3. Bane's shooting is the clearest spacing number on the roster, and Tristan da Silva's 37.4 across 77 games is the next best. Bane's durability gives the rotation a floor. It does not show that he can be a second creator when Banchero sits.

The payroll puts the burden on the cheap contracts.

Orlando carries $218.1M, above the first apron and past the $200.4M tax line. Wagner at $41.8M, Banchero at $41.5M, Bane at $39.4M and Suggs at $32.4M take up most of it, and the 2028 first-round pick belongs to Portland. Beede reported that the Magic picked up their options on da Silva and Jase Richardson, which keeps two low-cost rotation players in place. Those players get tested right away. Black and Jonathan Isaac have an estimated return of October 23, and Noah Penda and Izaiyah Nelson of November 18. Coach Sean Sweeney told the Sentinel that Black is "getting close."
