The 1981 draft that built the first winning Mavericks core arrived in a group of three; this era is betting on one.

The 21-Season Bar

Nowitzki played 21 seasons in Dallas before retiring, the longest single-franchise tenure in NBA history and the standard every young core here gets measured against. Cooper Flagg, at 19, put up 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists over 70 games last season, the number this rebuild is centered on. Dallas already closed the era that followed Nowitzki's, trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis in February 2025, making Flagg the third face of one continuous plan: build around a single star instead of a full draft class.

1981 vs. 2026

The 1981 draft delivered three rookies at once: Mark Aguirre, who averaged 24.6 points over seven years, Rolando Blackman, who averaged 19.2 over eleven, and Jay Vincent, who led the team in scoring in his first season. That class built Dallas's first winning record in 1983-84. This era doesn't have that draft depth. Dallas holds mostly protected or swap-only first-round picks through 2030 and owes future seconds to the Clippers and the Nets, so Flagg is the one building block this roster can still draft, and everything else is trade or free-agent math, like the Dwight Powell reunion reported this week.

Defense as Doctrine

General manager Nico Harrison justified trading Doncic by saying he believes defense wins championships, and that's still the operating bet under Dusty May. Last season's group ranked 19th in defensive rating and 27th in offensive rating, going 26-56 overall, proof the doctrine hasn't been installed yet. May's staff addition of Willie Green, formerly the Pelicans' head coach, is the first attempt at making Harrison's bet true instead of aspirational.
