Eight Regulars Return, Kings Arrive Shorthanded Too
The Warriors' rest-tagged regulars are all set to play tonight against a Kings team missing five of its own, while the hosts debate whether Brandon Williams' minutes spike survives the real rotation's return. HoopsRumors reports a five-year extension for Brandin Podziemski as the two look ahead to tip-off at Chase Center.
Transcript
The host & The analyst0:04The host: Stephen Curry comes off the rest tag tonight. So does Green, Podziemski, Melton, Niang, Payton, Santos, Lendeborg — eight names, same return date, October 10th. That's tonight.
0:16The analyst: Eight is the number that matters, not eight points. First time we've seen anything close to the real rotation since camp opened.
0:23The host: And it's not even Butler or Moody walking back through that door.
0:27The analyst: Those two don't move. Butler's knee has him out until January 2nd. Moody's out until December 1st. This is everybody else.
0:35The host: So the last two losses — Clippers, Portland — those don't tell us anything about this team. Tonight does.
0:42The analyst: Slow down. This is preseason game four, 0-0, against a Kings team that's also 0-0. One night doesn't settle anything either.
0:52The host: Fair, but at least we see the actual group. Sacramento's banged up too — Sabonis, Keegan Murray, Ben Simmons, Leaky Black all without a clear answer tonight, Malik Monk's getting rest.
1:04The analyst: Doug Christie's down five rotation pieces from a team that went 22-60. Their defensive rating was 120.3 last season. Their net rating was minus 9.7.
1:16The host: Zach LaVine's their leading scorer when healthy — 19.2 points per game across 39 games, last season. If he suits up, he's priority one on defense.
1:27The analyst: He's not on that injury list, so he should go. But Sacramento's in the second game of this road trip on one day of rest. Short legs.
1:36The host: We've got two days off ourselves. That's the matchup — our rest against their road legs, our real lineup against their short bench.
1:44The analyst: Here's the number I'd actually watch: Brandon Williams, plus 14 minutes per game over his last three, with a teammate out.
1:52The host: That's a real jump for a guy who wasn't playing 20 minutes a night back in August.
1:57The analyst: It's real, but it's a three-game sample built entirely on somebody else's absence. The names coming back tonight are exactly the names that created that opening.
2:07The host: So you're saying it disappears tonight.
2:09The analyst: I'm saying watch the first rotation change Kerr makes in the second quarter. If Williams' twenty-plus minutes survive Curry and Podziemski both playing, that tells you something real.
2:21The host: We flagged this same thing after Portland on October 7th — said to watch how Williams and Bassey split those extra minutes.
2:28The analyst: Bassey's bump was the same story — plus 9 minutes per game over his last three, with somebody else out. Tonight's the test for both of them, same night.
2:39The host: Why do two preseason bench minutes even matter this much?
2:43The analyst: Because the roster's capped out. Payroll's at 223.3 million, above the 221.7 million second apron. There's no trade market fix if Butler or Moody need company on that list.
2:57The host: So Bassey and Williams aren't just preseason minutes — they're the actual depth plan.
3:02The analyst: Exactly. Between Curry's 62.6 million and Butler's 56.8 million alone, this front office already spent the flexibility. Whoever holds minutes tonight keeps them by default, not by winning a competition.
3:18The host: Portland's the game that explains why tonight looks different anyway. We lost 118-123 there on the 7th, with Miles Kelly scoring 24 and Dalen Terry scoring 23 — good for them, but that was a lineup of rookies and two-way players against an NBA defense.
3:37The analyst: Right, and tonight's roster isn't that roster. That's the whole point of getting Curry and Green back in the building.
3:44The host: This tips off two hours from now right here at Chase Center. No national broadcast on this one — it's preseason — so it's local or the app.
3:53The analyst: Before we go — HoopsRumors is reporting the Warriors and Brandin Podziemski have agreed to a five-year extension. Reporting, not official. Nothing's filed yet.
4:03The host: Podziemski's only in year three. A five-year extension on top of that is a serious vote of confidence from this front office.
4:11The analyst: It's a report. We'll treat it as real when there's a number attached to it.
4:16The host: So, Dub Nation — with the real rotation back tonight, does this team look like itself again, or does a shorthanded Kings team make that answer a mirage too?
4:25The analyst: Watch Brandon Williams' minutes in the second quarter — that's the real tell tonight.
4:30The host: Full breakdown after the horn, every night, right here on the Warriors section at Hoops Nightly. See you after tip.
