AJ Green Is the Three-Point Constant on a Retooled Bucks Roster

Milwaukee needs his 41.9 percent three-point shot to keep falling without Giannis Antetokounmpo drawing the defense.

AJ Green enters his fourth season as Milwaukee's most reliable floor-spacer, a role that survived the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade intact. Last season he shot 41.9 percent on 7.1 three-point attempts a night, a specialist's workload on a team that finished 32-50.

Last season

AJ Green played all 78 games last season, averaging 29.1 minutes, 10.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists. He fired 7.1 three-pointers a night, made 41.9 percent of them, and shot 85.5 percent from the line, good for a 62.7 percent true shooting mark on just a 13.5 percent usage rate. Milwaukee's offense and defense ran at 113.1 and 116.7 with him on the floor, a -3.6 mark overall — better than the team's -6.1 mark for the full season.

This summer

The roster around him turned over almost entirely. Milwaukee sent Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami on June 23 for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware and Kasparas Jakucionis, and hired Taylor Jenkins as head coach on April 30. Green, now in his fourth season, is one of the few names who survived the rebuild intact.

This week

Milwaukee opened its preseason slate with a 97-116 defeat to the Timberwolves on October 5, then answered with a 128-126 win at Oklahoma City two days later. Green is not on the Bucks' injury report; the only name there is Nate Ament, day-to-day with an ankle issue and an expected return date of October 11.

Milwaukee visits Charlotte to close its run of road preseason games, with Green auditioning for the same specialist role in Jenkins' offense that he has filled for four years. The question for him now is volume: whether a roster built around Herro and Jaquez Jr. still clears 7-plus three-point looks a night for a shooter who has never needed more.

Next Milwaukee's regular-season opener is October 21 at Washington — the first game that will show whether Green's three-point volume holds in the new offense.
What is AJ Green's role on the Bucks?

Green is a floor-spacing shooting guard who attempted 7.1 three-pointers a night last season and made 41.9 percent of them, with a 13.5 percent usage rate that reflects a catch-and-shoot role rather than a primary scoring one.

Is AJ Green injured?

No. Green is not on the Bucks' injury report; the only Milwaukee player listed is Nate Ament, who is day-to-day with an ankle issue.
