Camp Shrinks by Four, Carter's Deal Changes Shape, Detroit Is Next

Boston trimmed its roster body a day after the preseason closed 3-0 and two days before games count.

Boston released four training-camp players on October 18 and converted Devin Carter to a two-way deal, closing out preseason business before Tuesday's opener at Detroit. The moves leave a 17-man roster carrying $203.9 million in salary, comfortably above the league's tax threshold.

Four camp invitees are gone in a single transaction batch.

Gabe McGlothan, Tucker DeVries, Milos Uzan and Hayden Gray all left the roster on October 18. Hoopsrumors had flagged the cuts a day earlier without naming anyone; the transaction log now does. DeVries and Uzan had scored 9 and 14 points respectively in the preseason finale three nights earlier, which says more about how deep this roster went in October than about where either player stood with the team.

Carter moves to a two-way contract rather than off the roster entirely.

The conversion, reported October 17, keeps him in the organization on a lighter deal. No effective date accompanied the report, and the corresponding move it implies — a open two-way slot — still has not been filled by name.

The preseason closed unbeaten at three games.

Boston's last tune-up was a 125-120 win at Philadelphia on October 16, Hugo Gonzalez scoring 21 off the bench. None of it counts. The next game, October 20 at Detroit, does.

Payroll sits above the tax threshold with the roster now settled.

At $203.9 million against a $200.4 million line, Boston is paying for Jayson Tatum ($58.5M), Paul George ($54.1M) and Derrick White ($30.3M) to anchor a team that has not yet played a game that mattered.

Who did the Celtics waive on October 18?

Gabe McGlothan, Tucker DeVries, Milos Uzan and Hayden Gray all left the roster that day, confirming an October 17 hoopsrumors report that four camp invitees would be cut.

When do the Celtics play their first regular-season game?
