The Raptors arrive in Detroit with no regular-season record yet, so the numbers worth tracking are the ones already on the books: payroll, last year's ratings and Thursday's box score at New York. Together they sketch a team waiting on its opener, not a verdict on it.

Above the Line

Toronto's payroll sits at $202.5 million, above the $200.4 million luxury tax threshold. Kawhi Leonard's extension, worth $50.3 million, is the largest single number on the books, ahead of Scottie Barnes at $41.8 million, Immanuel Quickley at $32.5 million and RJ Barrett at $29.6 million. Jakob Poeltl's $19.5 million carries a player option, the one deal on this list that isn't fully guaranteed beyond this season. Away from payroll, Toronto still owns every first-round pick through 2030 except for a 2027 swap, the kind of flexibility that matters more in July than in October.

Defense Carries, Offense Lags

Last season Toronto finished 46-36 with a defense ranked 5th in the league and an offense ranked just 14th, producing a net rating that settled at 2.9, 11th overall. Pace sat at 99.2, middle of the league, evidence that Rajakovic's group wins more with stops than with tempo. That gap between the two ends of the floor is the clearest explanation for a team that won games without ever threatening for a top seed, and it is the question this roster has to answer before preseason numbers become regular-season ones.

Starters Carried the Load

In Thursday's 120-122 preseason loss at the Knicks, Toronto's starters outscored the bench 75-34. Scottie Barnes led everyone with 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting, including 4-for-5 from three; RJ Barrett added 21 and Immanuel Quickley 18. Quickley's plus-9 was the team's best plus-minus of the night; Ja'Kobe Walter's minus-16 was the worst. The lineup that finished the game didn't include a single starter, a reminder that preseason closers are about development minutes, not final answers.

Are the Raptors over the luxury tax this season?

Toronto's payroll is $202.5 million against a $200.4 million tax line, with Kawhi Leonard's $50.3 million extension the largest contract on the roster.

How many points did Scottie Barnes score against the Knicks?

Barnes scored 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting, including 4-for-5 from three, in Toronto's 120-122 preseason loss at New York on October 15.
