Cap Watch: Thunder Payroll Lands Between the Two Aprons

A $216.2M payroll and five big contracts show how tight Oklahoma City's financial math is before camp begins.

Oklahoma City's payroll sits at $216.2M, clear of the $200.4M tax threshold and the $209.0M apron threshold, trailing only the $221.7M second apron. Five contracts drive that number, and the books loosen next summer when three deals come off.

$216.2M: Team Payroll

Payroll Above Two Lines

Oklahoma City carries $216.2M in payroll across 15 contracts, clearing the $200.4M tax threshold and the $209.0M apron line while sitting below the $221.7M second apron. Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren each carry the highest number on the books at $41.5M, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at $40.8M, Isaiah Hartenstein at $23.1M, and Alex Caruso at $19.6M. Those five contracts alone account for most of the total, leaving a thin group of rookie and minimum deals to fill out the rest of the roster.

What Clears Next Summer

Cason Wallace, Kenrich Williams and Christoph Tilly are the only three names on this season's payroll missing from the 2027-28 cap sheet. Wallace's rookie scale deal runs out after this season, Kenrich Williams's contract expires, and Tilly's Exhibit 10 deal was never guaranteed past training camp. Jaylin Williams and Ajay Mitchell carry team options for 2027-28, at $7.8M and $2.9M, giving Oklahoma City two more choices before those books are set. The deals that remain climb instead of fall: Gilgeous-Alexander's number rises to $61.0M, Williams and Holmgren each move to $44.8M, Hartenstein goes to $25.0M and Caruso to $21.0M, so clearing three contracts barely offsets the raises already locked in.

Draft Capital Stays Flexible

Oklahoma City owns swap rights on its picks in 2027 and 2028, then owns its own picks outright in 2029 and 2030. That combination keeps the franchise's draft capital tied to how its own season plays out through 2028, with full control returning after. None of that capital is committed to outgoing money, since the roster's long-term salary is carried almost entirely by the five largest contracts already on the books, a group unlikely to change before camp opens.

Is Oklahoma City over the tax this season?

Yes. The $216.2M payroll is above the $200.4M tax threshold and the $209.0M apron threshold, though still under the $221.7M second apron.

Which contracts come off Oklahoma City's books after this season?

Cason Wallace, Kenrich Williams and Christoph Tilly are off the 2027-28 cap sheet, while Jaylin Williams and Ajay Mitchell each have team options for that year.
