The Thunder carry $214.8M in payroll, above the $209.0M first apron and below the $221.7M second apron. The 2027-28 sheet rises with Gilgeous-Alexander's $61.0M, and the real levers are two team options and the young contracts already in hand.

$214.8M: Payroll

Living Between the Aprons

Payroll stands at $214.8M. That is well clear of the $165.0M cap and the $200.4M tax threshold, and past the $209.0M first apron. The $221.7M second apron is the line with room still under it, and that cushion is the real limit on any in-season move. Five contracts carry the load: Holmgren and Jalen Williams at $41.5M each, Gilgeous-Alexander at $40.8M, Hartenstein at $23.1M and Caruso at $19.6M. No other deal on the sheet reaches $8M, which is what a roster built through the draft looks like.

Next Year Climbs First

The 2027-28 sheet already lists Gilgeous-Alexander at $61.0M, Holmgren and Jalen Williams at $44.8M each, Hartenstein at $25.0M and Caruso at $21.0M. Kenrich Williams, at $5.0M this season, has no 2027-28 number. Wallace's $7.4M salary is not coming off either. Hoops Rumors reported a $139MM extension on October 19, so his cost rises. The two levers the front office fully controls are team options, Jaylin Williams at $7.8M and Ajay Mitchell at $2.9M. After 13.6 points a game last season, Mitchell at that price is the easiest call on the books.

Picks and Patience

Oklahoma City holds swap rights on its 2027 and 2028 picks in both rounds and owns its own first- and second-rounders outright in 2029 and 2030. The young contracts already on the roster are the more immediate asset: Mara at $5.8M, Topic at $5.4M, Sorber at $4.9M, Stirtz at $4.7M and McCain at $4.4M. McCain's 20 points in the 116-104 win at San Antonio make the case for that tier. This club's flexibility comes from cheap deals that keep improving, not from cap room.

Are the Thunder over the luxury tax in 2026-27?

Yes. Payroll is $214.8M, above both the $200.4M tax line and the $209.0M first apron, but still below the $221.7M second apron.

How much will Shai Gilgeous-Alexander make next season?

His 2027-28 salary is listed at $61.0M, up from $40.8M this season, making him the largest number on the Thunder's books.
