Rumor Check: Claxton's Timeline and the Cap Room Nobody's Using

A hamstring report rated low confidence, a two-way deal confirmed by events, and $36 million before the tax line.

This week's file on the Bulls runs from a low-confidence hamstring timeline to a signing the roster has already confirmed. None of it requires creative math — Chicago has plenty of room before the tax line, picks notwithstanding.

Claxton's Two-Week Report. Hoops Rumors reported Nic Claxton out at least two weeks with a hamstring issue on October 5, confidence 32, still open. Chicago's own injury list has him unresolved, with an estimated return of October 21 — the opener at Toronto. Treat the two-week number as a report, not a fact.

Hawkins' Deal Confirmed. An October 5 report pegged Jordan Hawkins agreeing to a two-way deal at just 33 confidence. He officially joined the roster October 6, confirming the move despite the low score attached to it. A reminder that the number tracks source reliability, not whether a report turns out right.

Cowley's Second-Unit Notes. Joe Cowley filed Bulls Notes on Miller, Smith, Essengue and Jones and their second unit on October 15, the newest entry in the file. It carries no transaction, no injury update, and no number — a notebook item on rotation shape, not a report to check against the cap.

Cap Room Sits Open. Chicago's payroll runs $164.3 million, about $36 million below the $200.4 million luxury tax line, with more room before it even reaches the salary cap. Giddey ($25.0M), Claxton ($23.1M), Powell ($21.5M), Williams ($18.0M) and Okoro ($11.8M) carry the biggest numbers. None of the open reports above require shedding salary to fit.

September Roundups, No Detail. The confidence scores on the oldest reports tell the story: 37 for a September 28 injury roundup that lumped the Bulls in with Haliburton, Curry, Luka and Beal with no specifics, and 21 for a September 25 camp-roster piece already overtaken by the moves that followed. Low numbers, no new facts.

Draft Picks Still Owed. Chicago controls every first-round pick on its board through 2030 but owes its 2027 second-rounder to Oklahoma City, with 2028 and 2030 second-rounders tied up in swaps. Any rumored deal involving Chicago's future assets has fewer clean seconds to trade than the pick list suggests at a glance.

On deck The preseason closes out tonight against Minnesota before the Bulls open the regular season October 21 at Toronto, with Milwaukee and Washington following within the week.
Is Nic Claxton really out two weeks with his hamstring?

That specific number comes from a single report rated confidence 32 and still open. Chicago's own injury list has him unresolved, with an estimated return of October 21.

Do the Bulls have cap room to make a move?

Yes. Payroll runs $164.3 million, about $36 million below the $200.4 million luxury tax line, so money is not the obstacle to any rumored deal.
