This roster's ceiling flashed for stretches last season, but the full-season record, the money committed and the draft capital already spoken for say there isn't much room left to wait.
Golden State returns Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Kristaps Porziņģis and Jimmy Butler III as the core of the 2026-27 roster, coming off a 37-45 finish that ranked 20th of 30 teams in net rating. Getting back into contention now depends on health and fit more than fresh additions, since payroll and future draft picks are already committed to keeping this exact group together.
The Ceiling Showed Up in Small Doses
Last season, when Curry, Butler, Green, J. Kuminga and Podziemski shared the floor, Golden State outscored opponents by 16.9 points per 100 possessions over eight games and 65 minutes, running a 119.7 offense against a 102.8 defense. A steadier group — Curry, Butler, Green, Moody and Post — logged 125 minutes over 17 games and finished 6.5 points worse than opponents, surrendering 119.9 per 100. The best version existed. It just didn't last long enough to show up in the standings.

Golden State finished 37-45 last season, with a net rating of -0.5 that ranked 20th of 30 teams, an offense at 113.8 that ranked 19th and a defense at 114.4 that ranked 16th, all played at a pace of 100.0 possessions. Butler averaged 20.0 points on 37.6 percent shooting from three in 38 games, Curry scored 26.6 a night in 43, and Podziemski was the only regular to play all 82, at 13.8 points and 5.1 rebounds. The talent produced flashes. The record says health and fit, not talent, were the missing pieces.
There Isn't Much Left to Spend
Golden State has chosen to keep spending on this exact group rather than retool around it. Payroll runs to $221.1 million, beyond a first-apron threshold of $209.0 million, with a second-apron mark of $221.7 million not far past it. Draft capital tells the same story: Golden State keeps its own first-round picks in 2027, 2028 and 2029, but a 2029 second-rounder goes to Brooklyn, and a protected 2030 first and conditional 2030 second are promised to Memphis. If this version of the roster doesn't hold, there isn't much left to trade for a fix.
So, How Many Years Is This, Really?
Curry is 38, 17 years into his career. Green is 36, 14 years in. Butler is 37, in year 15. That trio produced the plus-16.9 stretch and the 37-45 finish alike. Moody and Butler are each dealing with a knee issue, with neither expected back until around Dec. 1, which means the answer to how many competitive years are left starts this fall as a health question, before it's a roster one.
