Curry Hasn't Decided, and Nothing Else Here Matters More

Every camp roster move this month is secondary to one open question: whether Stephen Curry signs an extension.

Anthony Slater reported Tuesday that Curry still has not decided on a new deal, and by Wednesday and Thursday five more outlets were writing versions of the same story. Curry himself has said he isn't rushing it and isn't going anywhere, but nothing is signed.

What actually happened

Slater's Tuesday report, via hoopsrumors, said there is no extension decision yet. RealGM followed with word that Curry is still weighing his options. The Athletic quoted him saying he's "not going anywhere," and ESPN's Slater wrote there is "no drama" around the delay. Golden State of Mind's Sean Keane added that Curry has no interest in exploring free agency. Six reports, same open question, no signature.

The knee is part of this, too

NBC Sports Bay Area's Monte Poole reported Curry addressed his right knee heading into camp, saying he's "not afraid of it." He's 38, coming off a season in which he still led the team at 26.6 points a game but appeared in only 43 of 82. That durability question sits underneath every extension conversation, whether the reporting says so directly or not.

Why $62.6 million is the number

Curry's current salary already anchors a payroll of $223.3 million, above the second apron, alongside Jimmy Butler's $56.8 million and Green's $27.7 million. Any extension adds another large number to a books already deep past the tax line, on a core whose three biggest earners are all past their mid-thirties.

The clock underneath the clock

Preseason opens October 4 at the Clippers, with the Lakers, Trail Blazers and Kings to follow before the October 21 opener at Los Angeles on ESPN. None of that requires Curry's deal to be resolved first, but every week camp runs without one makes the delay itself part of the story fans are reading about him.
