Golden State's Cap Relief Is a Year Away, Not a Line Item
Above every penalty threshold now, the Warriors won't find room by trading — they'll find it when deals expire next summer.
Golden State's payroll sits at $223.3 million, above the $221.7 million apron line and the $200.4 million tax line, against a $165.0 million cap. The real shift comes in 2027-28, when much of the depth chart comes off the books and only Curry, Porzingis and Moody remain guaranteed among the top earners.

Where the money sits
Golden State's payroll is $223.3 million, clear of every line the league draws: the $200.4 million tax threshold, the $209.0 million apron above it, and the $221.7 million apron above that — against a salary cap of $165.0 million.
What clears out next summer
The 2027-28 cap sheet drops some of the biggest numbers on this roster: Jimmy Butler's $56.8 million, Draymond Green's $27.7 million, Brandin Podziemski's $5.7 million, plus Georges Niang, Brandon Williams, Charles Bassey, Gary Payton II, Alex Toohey and Dalen Terry, none of whom appear on next year's list. What's left: Curry at $55.7 million, Porzingis on a $20.5 million player option, Moody at $13.4 million, Horford at $7.2 million, Lendeborg at $6.4 million, Melton on a $5.8 million player option, Santos at $5.0 million and Richard at $2.5 million.
The picks are the one unspent asset
Golden State still owns its first-round picks in 2027, 2028 and 2029, plus second-round swaps in 2027 and 2028. It owes a 2029 second-rounder to Brooklyn, a protected 2030 first to Memphis and a conditional 2030 second to the same team. With salary this stacked, those picks are the one thing on this roster that hasn't already been spent.
What Curry's extension doesn't tell us
Curry's extension, finalized September 25, locked in the most expensive player on the books for two more seasons without any reported number attached. Whatever it pays him lands on top of a payroll that is already $223.3 million — the kind of total that makes next summer's expirings, not this year's roster, the Warriors' actual reset point.
Are the Warriors over the luxury tax?
Yes. Golden State's $223.3 million payroll is above the $200.4 million tax line and both aprons, against a $165.0 million salary cap.
What happens to the Warriors' cap sheet in 2027-28?
Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green and several rotation deals come off the books, leaving Curry, Porzingis, Moody, Horford, Lendeborg, Melton, Santos and Richard as the money still on it.
