Otega Oweh was upgraded from day-to-day to out on Wednesday after undergoing surgery on a right Achilles injury, and he will miss the entirety of the 2026-27 season. The 23-year-old guard will not play in Thursday's season opener at the Rockets or at any point this season.

What happened

Oweh was upgraded from day-to-day to out on Wednesday at 9:35 PM ET with a right Achilles injury, a day after he had been listed day-to-day with a right lower leg issue. The 23-year-old guard underwent surgery on the Achilles Wednesday and will miss the entirety of the 2026-27 season, Brandon Rahbar of DailyThunder.com reports. Oweh had cycled on and off the injury report recently: he was cleared from day-to-day on Oct. 5 after being listed day-to-day with a left lower leg issue back on Sept. 6.

What it means for the Thunder

Oklahoma City opens its season Thursday at the Rockets at 8:30 PM ET on NBA TV, sitting at 0-0 with no regular-season games played yet. Oweh will not get a chance to carve out a role in his third year after the offseason surgery. The Thunder's backcourt and wing rotation already runs through Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (33.2 minutes, 31.1 points per game), Jalen Williams (28.4 minutes, 17.1 points), Cason Wallace (26.6 minutes, 8.6 points) and Ajay Mitchell (25.8 minutes, 13.6 points), the players set to soak up the minutes Oweh would have competed for. With no games played yet this season, there is no record to compare with him on the floor versus without him.

What to watch

The next injury report will list Oweh out as Oklahoma City opens its schedule Thursday at the Rockets. Brandon Rahbar of DailyThunder.com reports he will miss the entirety of the 2026-27 season, and no specific return date has been announced. The same Thunder report also carries four other day-to-day cases worth tracking into the opener: Ajay Mitchell (rest), Jaylin Williams (heel), Thomas Sorber (right knee) and Chet Holmgren (quadriceps).
