Curry Took Less, and the Front Office Owes an Answer

Stephen Curry agreed to take less money to stay, and now it's on the front office to make that discount mean something on the roster.

Golden State finalized a two-year, $116 million extension for Stephen Curry on September 26, a deal Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reported comes in $20 million below the $136.7 million max Curry could have signed for. The same day, the team added guard Nick Boyd on a training camp contract worth $1,357,763.

The deal

Golden State made it official on September 26: a two-year, $116 million extension for Curry, reported the same day by Hoops Rumors, RealGM and the Athletic. ESPN reported the team's general manager is confident Curry finishes his career in Golden State. At 38, headed into his 17th season, that security is more than a formality.

A discount, not a gift

Johnson's report put the discount at about $20 million under the $136.7 million max Curry was eligible for. That gap matters on a roster already at $224.7 million in total salary, above the tax's toughest threshold, with a tax line of $200.4 million. Curry's $62.6 million salary is still the largest on the books, ahead of Jimmy Butler III's $56.8 million and Draymond Green's $27.7 million.

Camp keeps churning

The same day, Golden State signed guard Nick Boyd to a camp contract worth $1,357,763, the latest move in a roster that has added and dropped players all month. Butler remains out with a knee injury, targeting a return around December 1. Moody carries the same date on his own knee injury. Neither will be in camp when it opens.

What's next

Preseason opens October 4 at the Clippers, with home games against the Lakers on October 6 and the Kings on October 10, plus a stop in Portland on October 7. The regular season opens October 21 at the Lakers, on ESPN. Curry's money is settled; the open question is whether camp turns up enough help before Moody and Butler both return in December.
